Jayachandra announces retirement from First Class cricket

Orissa all-rounder P Jayachandra today announced his retirement from First Class cricket after playing 69 matches in a 12-year-long career, spanning from 1996 to 2007. Two days ago, he informed Orissa Cricket Association (OCA) about his decision and the state body forwarded his letter to the BCCI for processing of his retirement benefits, includeing pension.

``Young talents have proved themselves competent enough to shoulder the responsibility of the state senior team. So, I decided to quit first class cricket and give another youngsters the chance to represent Orissa,`` said the 34-year-old dashing batsman and medium pace bowler today.

Known to friends and teammates a Chinna, Jayachandra made his First Class debut in a Ranji Trophy match against Bengal at Eden Gardens, Kolkata in 1996 and played his last First Class match against Gujarat at Railway ground here in 2008.

Jayachandra, however, said that he would continue to play cricket for Saheed Sporting, his home club and Accountant General of Orissa, his employer. He identified Orissa`s Ranji Trophy semifinal match against Baroda in 1999-2000 as the most memorable experience of his career. Despite scoring 48 and 84 in the match, Jayachandra could not save Orissa from defeat.
