Orissa`s campaign in the 24th National Under-13 Chess championship at Puducherry produced only one bronze medal, which was bagged by Bhubaneswar boy Rakesh Kumar Nayak in the open category today. In the 11-round competition, he secured 8.5 points with seven wins, three draws and one defeat.
Diptayan Ghosh (West Bengal) and Girish A Koushik (Karnataka) emerged champion and runner-up, scoring 9.5 and nine points respectively. Among five other Orissa boys, Rakesh Kumar Jena (8 points), Saswat Khuntia (6.5), Sambat Subhankar Roy (6), Bhaskar Sri Viswaroopanand (5.5) and Baivab Mishra (5.5) occupied 8th, 41st, 58th, 77th and 81st positions respectively in the final standings.
In the girls’ category, top seed Orissa’s Sunyasakta Satpathy contended herself with the fouth position, garnering eight points with six wins, four draws and one defeat. Gk Monnisha of Tamil Nadu won the title with 9.5 points.
Among four other Orissa girls, Sradhanjali Jena (7 points), Smaraki Mohanty (7), Akankhya Kabi (6) and Sribrinda Rout (6) finished 18th, 22nd, 36th and 49th respectively.
