Tribal sprinter Ranjita Mahanta made Orissa proud when she establised two new national record and bagged gold medals to emerge as the best girl (u-18) athlete of the 7th National Youth Athletics Championship, which concluded at Nehru Stadium in Coimbatore (TN) yesterday.
A trainee of Government Sports Hostel here, Ranjita registered the two national records in 100m and 200m sprints, clocking 12.08 seconds (heats) and 24.49 seconds (final) respectively. She won gold in both the events with a timing of 12.20 seconds in 100m final. Ranjita won her third gold in girls 1000m sprint medley relay with Ros Dipika Baa, Purnima Hembram and Bibiana Kulu as partners (timing: 2:20.32).
Orissa secured fourth position in the overall medals tally, collecting five yellow metals. Purnima won the other two golds in girls 100m hurdles (15.22s) and heptathlon (4062 pts).
