Uday Kaul`s unbeaten 73 helped Punjab drew their four-day Ranji Trophy Super League (Group-A) match at Sector-16 Stadium in Chandigarh today. But Orissa gained three points by virtue of taking a 106-run first innings lead, while Punjab got one point.
Chasing a target of 353 runs on the last day, Punjab overcame a sluggish start to make 197 for four in the second innings before play was called off. Earlier, resuming the second innings at 196 for eight, Orissa batted for over an hour before declaring at 247 for eight. Orissa stumper Haladhar Das remained unbeaten with 67.
Orissa’s hope for their first win of the season brightened as Punjab lost two wickets with 32 runs on the board. The home side lost their fourth wicket at 131 when captain Pankaj Dharmani fell to Dhiraj Singh for 40. But Kaul and V K Bhalla shattered Orissa’s victory hope by stitching together 66 runs for unfinished fifth wicket.
After the end of sixth round, Orissa occupied the seventh place in the eight-team Group-A table with nine points, while Punjab climbed up to the second spot with 16 points. In the last round of matches to be played from December 15 to 18, Orissa will next meet Himachal Pradesh at Dharamsala, while Punjab will take on Railways at Karnail Singh Stadium in New Delhi.
