Orissa international Pradeep Kumar Patra won the gold medal in the junior 60kg weight class of the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship at Pune today. Patra lifted a total of 580kg, which included 215kg in squad, 240kg in deadlift and 125kg in benchpress, his coach Hari Prasad Pattanayak informed.
A product of city-based Utkal Karate School, Patra also created a new meet record in deadlift. This was the second international medals for Patra, who had won a silver in the Asian Junior Powerlifting Championship at Taskent (Uzbekistan) in April, 2008.
