Orissa Cricket Association`s gamble in team selection proved suicidal as the State team suffered a humiliating seven-wicket defeat against Assam in the opening match of the East Zone Twenty20 Cricket Tournament for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy at the Railway Stadium in Dhanbad today.
An inexperienced Orissa team, comprising six debutants (Biplab Samantaray, Rakesh Mohanty, Subhrajit Sahoo, Lagnajit Samal, Prasant Sahoo and Deepak Behera) was bundled out for 83 in 15.4 overs after electiong to bat first. Former India and Mumbai leg-spinner Sairaj Bahutule was the most successful bowler for Assam, bagging four wickets for 19 runs.
In reply, Assam overhauled the target in 15.1 overs, losing three wickets in the process. The win fetched Assam four points, while Orissa drew blank. Orissa will next meet Tripura on Wednesday.
