International Master Swayangsu and Anwesh Upadhyaya gave Orissa a double delight by shocking two Grandmasters in the ninth and penultimate round of the 4th Kolkata Open Grandmaster Chess Tournament at Gorky Sadan in Kolkata today.
Air India employee Satyapragyan forced second-seeded Engligh Grandmaster Nigel Short to a draw, while state champion Anwesh defeated Grandmaster Neelotpal Das.
With this draw, Satyapragyan took his score to 6.5 points and shared the third place with four Grandmasters. He will next meet Vietnam GM Liem Le Quang (7.5), who regained the sole lead with a win over Uzbekistan GM Anton Filippov (6.5). Grandmaster Viktor Laznicka (Czech Republic) retained the second place with seven points.
Short (Elo 2706), the second highest rated player in the tournament, was the third Grandmaster to split point with Satyapragya, who earlier achieved a dream success, defeating three GMs in fourth, seventh and eighth rounds.
Other three Orissa players, Swayams Mishra and Woman International Master Padmini Rout suffered defeats today. For state champion Anwesh, this was the biggest victory of his career and increased his points tally to five.
Orissa results (Round 9): Swayangsu Satyapragyan (6.) drew with Nigel Short (Eng), Anwesh Upadhyaya (5) beat GM Neelotpal Das (Ind), Swayams Mishra (4.5) lost to IM MR Lalith Babu (Ind), Padmini Rout (4) lost to Ankit R Rajpara (Ind).
