Dhenkanal and Ganjam posted hard-earned wins to enter the quarterfinals of the State Hockey Championship for Nalco Cup at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack today.
Dhenkanal rode on Janma Majhi’s goal to edge out Jagatsinghpur 1-0. Ganjam overcame Deogarh 5-4. Arvin Barla scored a brace for Ganjam, while his teammates Goura Mohanty, Chakra Behera and Amit Minz contributed one goal each. The four goals for Deogarh were struck by Binay Kujur (2), Subal Barla and Anand Tirkey.
Earlier, Phulbani received walk-over against tournament sponsors Nalco, which failed to turn up due to unavoidable reason. According to OHA assistant secretary Pranab Kishore Pattnaik, the Damanjodi-based Nalco hockey team could not travel due to recent Naxal attack there.
