Orissa stormed into Ranji Trophy quarterfinals, hammering Jammu & Kashmir by 420 runs on the penultimate day of their five-day pre-quarterfinal match at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today. This was overall 38th win in a total of 179 matches for Orissa in Ranji Trophy and 1st win in only match against Jammu & Kashmir.
Rashmi Ranjan Parida, Pravanjan Mulliick, Sanjay Satpathy, Sanjay Raul, Debasis Mohanty and Suresh Kumar played prominent roles in the emphatic win. In the absence of regular captain Shiv Sundar Das, who was representing India in a Test series against Australia, Raul led Orissa in this match.
Riding on a career-best 220 (326 balls, 35x4) by Parida and 191 (252 balls, 22x4, 4x6) by Mullick, Orissa amassed a towering total of 501 after Raul won the toss and opted to bat. With these marvelous knocks Parida and Mullick passed 3000 and 2000 runs in first-class and Ranji Trophy matches respectively.
In reply, Jammu & Kashmir were dismissed for 151 with Sanjay Satpathy and Jagannath Das bagging four and three wickets for Orissa. Despite taking a first-innings lead of 350 runs, Orissa did not force the opposition to follow on. Instead, they batted again and declared their second innings at 299 for four.
Raul became the third Orissa batsman to score a century in this match, hitting an unbeaten 113 with the help of six boundaries. He also passed 3500 runs in first-class matches in the process. Suresh Kumar, who was drafted in to fill the place of S S Das, and Debasis Mohanty compounded the plight of the J&K bowlers, hitting a respective maiden half-century.
The 104-ball 55 by Suresh Kumar and the 61-ball unbeaten 50 by Mohanty were also their highest score in first-class matches. Chasing a mammoth target of 650, Jammu & Kashmir lost the match, getting all out for 229 in the second innings. Satpathy claimed another four wickets in the second innings to finish with a match haul of eight for 90.
