Valiant batting by Rashmi Ranjan Parida and captain Shiv Sundar Das rescued Orissa from the jaws of defeat against Tamil Nadu in their four-day Ranji Trophy Group-C Super League match, which ended in draw on the final day at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today. However, Tamil Nadu took home five points by taking first-innings lead, while Orissa settled with three.
Needing 442 runs to escape defeat, host Orissa batted with greate courage in the second innings to draw the match, making 311 for three at stumps on the final day. Parida was the saviour-in-chief, scoring an unbeaten 147 (315 balls, 19x4). Das and Sanjay Raul provided excellent support to Parida with knocks of 83 (202 balls, 9x4) and 42 respectively.
Two sizeable partnerships, involving Parida, Das and Raul denied Tamil Nadu what would have been an outright win. Parida first put on 174 runs for the second wicket with Das and followed it with another 89 runs for the third wicket with Raul.
Before the rescue efforts of Parida and Das, Tamil Nadu were the dominant side for the first three days. Opting to bat after captain Sridharan Sharath won the toss, Tamil Nadu compiled a healthy total of 327, thanks to a 137-run partnership for the last wicket between Rajat Bhatia (72) and Jayaraman Gokulakrishnan (59*). Among Orissa bowlers, pacers Debasis Mohanty, Ajay Barik and debutant Bipin Singh picked up three wickets each.
In reply, Orissa were in dire straits, losing six wickets for 89 runs. However, a career-best 59 not out (79 balls, 10x4) by stumper Yashpal Mohanty and his 63-run stand for the seventh wicket with Sanjay Satpathy (35) enabled them to make a modest total of 195.
Armed with a first-innings lead of 132 runs, Tamil Nadu put themselves in a commanding position, declaring their second innings at 309 for eight. But their hope for victory was spoiled by Parida and Das.
