Superb allround show by Sanjay Satpathy and Debasis Mohanty, coupled with a century by captain Shiv Sundar Das enabled Orissa crush host Saurashtra by 209 runs on the penultimate day of their four-day Ranji Trophy Group-C Super League match at Municipal Stadium in Rajkot today. This was overall 34th win in a total of 172 Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa and first win in their first game against Saurashtra.
Das gave Orissa a flying start, hitting a 149-ball 101 (17x4) and stitching together 169 runs for opening-wicket with Pradeep Das, who scored a career-best 69 (184 balls, 9x4). Opting to bat after winning the toss, Orissa compiled a healthy total of 372 with Rashmi Ranjan Parida (76, 116 balls, 12x4), Yashpal Mohanty (30), Sanjay Satpathy (27) and Debasis Mohanty (20 not out) also making notable contributions.
Orissa then rode on hauls of four-wickets each by Mohanty and Satpathy to dismiss Saurashtra for 238 and take a first-innings lead of 134 runs. Though Orissa were bowled out for 181 in their second innings, the overall lead of 315 runs put them firmly on the path of victory. Pradip Das (49), Sanjay Satpathy (43) and Debasis Mohanty (26) were among runs for the second time in the match.
Saurashtra suffered defeat as they were bundled out for 106, while chasing a daunting target of 316. Mohanty and Satpathy clinched victory for Orissa, bagging five wickets each in the second innings and nine apiece in the match. Niraj Odedra stood tall in defeat of the home team, bagging six wickets in each innings.
