Angul Stadium, Angul, became the 10th First-Class cricket venue of Orissa, staging the four-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match between Orissa and Assam from 3 to 6 January, 2000. Though the hard-fought match ended in a draw on the last day, host Orissa collected five points by taking first-innings lead, while Assam got three.
Orissa, however, enjoyed a distinct edge over their opponents, displaying better performance in all departments of the game. A flawless century by Sanjay Raul (120, 231 balls, 12x4, 1x6) and a half-century each by P Jayachandra (72, 111 balls, 11x4, 1x6) and Robin Morris (88, 147 balls, 7x4, 4x6) enabled the home team muster an imposing total of 425 after captain Shiv Sundar Das won the toss and decided to bat.
In reply, Assam were bowled out for 306 and conceded a first-innings lead of 119 runs. Off-spinner Sanjay Satpathy bamboozled the Assam batting line-up, scalping six wickets for 86 runs, while Jayachandra chipped in with two for 27.
In the second innings, Orissa declared at 202 for four with skipper Das (71, 94 balls, 5x4) and Prasant Mohapatra (62 n.o, 132 balls, 4x4) scoring a half-century each. Das and Mohapatra gave the team a solid start, compiling 118 runs in the first-wicket stand.
With an overall lead of 321 runs, Orissa had good opportunity to go for an out-right win. But Assam betted very well in the second innings and successfully spoiled the victory hope of the home team. When the match ended as draw, Assam were 265 for seven.
Assam captain Syed Zakaria Zuffri saved them from defeat, hitting a defiant knock of 144. Among Orissa bowlers, Raul was most successful, taking three wickets for 49 runs, while Satpathy picked up a brace to finish with a match haul of eight for 156.
