Maiden double hundred by Pravanjan Mullick, century by captain Sanjay Raul and five-wicket haul by Debasis Mohanty went in vain as host Orissa failed to register an outright win over Tripura in their four-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match, which ended in a draw on the last day at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today.
Orissa got off to a horrible start as they were reduced to two for eight after Raul won the toss and decided to bat. But Mullick and Raul converted the crisis into golden opportunity by compiling 243 runs in their third-wicket partnership. After Raul departed for 139 (220 balls, 15x4), Mullick added another 115 runs for the four-wicket stand with Rashmi Ranjan Parida.
The stupendous knock of Mullick came to an end when Aditya Shukla caught him of his won bowling for 201 (437 balls, 15x4, 1x6). Orissa eventully declared their first-innings at 521 for eight. Among other successful Orissa batsmen, Parida notched up half-century, while Robin Morris and Gautam Gopal contributed 35 and 30 respectively.
Orissa raised hopes of an innings victory when they dismissed Tripura for 235 and took a huge first-innings lead of 286 runs. Mohanty was most successful Orissa bowler, bagging a career-best five for 48. But after being forced to follow on, Tripura fought back with gumption to draw the match, putting put defiant batting in the second innings.
When the match ended, Tripura were going strong at 187 for three. Rajarshi Chaudhuri and Satrajit Lahiri saved Tripura from defeat, hitting 92 and 54 respectively in the second innings. Orissa, however, salvaged some consolation, securing five points from the match, while Tripura settled with three.
