Ranji Trophy: Orissa pip MP; Enter quarterfinals

Orissa marched into Ranji Trophy quarterfinals for the fourth time, edging out Madhya Pradesh on the basis of first-innings lead on the fifth and last day of their pre-quarterfinal match, which ended in draw at Nehru Stadium in Indore today.

Captain Ranjib Biswal, Prasanta Mohapatra, Sushil Kumar Prasad and debutant Shiv Sundar Das played notable roles in the indirect victory for Orissa. Opting to bat, Orissa rode on a century by Mohapatra (140, 295b, 17x4) and Biswal (138, 377b, 13x4, 1x6) to compile an imposing total of 437.

In reply, host Madhya Pradesh were bowled out for 370 and conceded a lead of 67 runs. Among Orissa bowlers, Sushil Kumar and Biswal captured three wickets each, while Abakash Khatua and Subash Chandra Mohanty picked up a brace each.

In the second innings, a sparkling 98 by Shiv Sundar Das and 65 by Sushil Kumar enabled Orissa to muster 244. Chasing a challenging target of 312 for victory, Madhya Pradesh escaped defeat by the skin of their teeth, thanks to an unbeaten 111 by Devashish Nilosey.

The home team were 230 for nine in the second innings when the exciting match ended. V Arvind was most successful Orissa bowler in the second innings with a career-best haul of four wickets for 102 runs.
