Fine bowling by Chetan Sharma helped Bengal beat Orissa by eight wickets on the penultimate day of their four-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match at Permit Ground in Balasore today. This was 60th overall loss in 131 Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa and 29th loss in 41 matches against Bengal.
Electing to bat after captain Ranjib Biswal won the toss, Orissa made a modest total of 204. Prasant Mohapatra was the top scorer with 47, while Karun Dubey and Abakash Khatua contributed 41 and 32 respectively. Chetan Sharma was most successful Bengal bowler, capturing five wickets for 52 runs.
In reply, Bengal rode on a half-century by Snehasish Ganguly, elder brother of captain Sourav Ganguly to compile a sizeable total of 313 and secured a lead of 109 runs. Among Orissa bowlers, V Arvind, Sushil Kumar Prasad and Ranjib Biswal scalped three wickets each.
In their second innings, Orissa were bowled out for 158 with Abakash Khatua (40) and Prasant Mohapatra (37) as leading scorers. Chetan Sharma added four wickets to his first-innings tally to finish with a match haul of nine for 86.
Orissa suffered a setback as Karun Dubey could not bat in the second innings due to injury. Bengal won the match by overhauling a modest target of 50 runs, losing two wickets in the process.
