CUTTACK 03-Jan-1993
Orissa batsmen gave a good account of themselves, hitting two centuries and three fifties in their four-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match, which ended in a draw on the final day at Tata Digwadi Stadium in Jamadoba today. However, Bihar finished with an edge over Orissa, securing 13 points, three more than their opponents.
Put into bat by Bihar captain-cum-stumper Syed Saba Karim, Orissa rode on a stroke-filled knock of 107 (135b, 16x4, 1x6) by Amiya Ray and an unbeaten 93 (212b, 13x4) by Abakash Khatua to pile up a healthy total of 384. Manas Ray, Bishnu Deb Mohanty, Ranjib Biswa and Asjit Jayaprakasham also made notable contributions.
But Bihar batted better to take a first-innings lead of 135 runs. An unbeaten 169 by Saba Karim enabled Bihar muster an imposing total of 519. But the home team’s hopes to win the match ended in vain as Orissa continued to bat well and declared their second innings at 340 for five.
Opening batsman Manas Ray hit his first century in first-class cricket with a solid knock of 112 (257b, 14x4, 1x6). He was well complimented by Ranjib Biswal and Prasanta Mohapatra with knocks of 97 and 72 respectively. When the match ended in draw, Bihar were one no wicket in their second innings. Among Orissa bowlers, captain Sourajit Mohapatra was most successful with four wickets for 170 runs. He, in the process, completed 100 wickets in first-class cricket.
