Bengal inflicted an innings and 338-run defeat on Orissa on the penultimate day of their four-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match at Eden Gardens in Calcutta today. This was the 59th overall defeat and 31st by innings margin in 126 Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa. Against Bengal, this was Orissa’s 28th loss and 20th by innings margin in 40 first-class matches.
Put into bat by Orissa captain Sourajit Mohapatra, Bengal flayed the opposition bowling attack before declaring at 636 for seven. Arun Lal, Shrikant Kalyani and captain Ashok Malhotra scored a century each, while Indu Bhushan Roy and Utpal Chatterjee notched up a half-century apiece. Ranjib Biswal was most successful Orissa bowler, bagging five wickets for 164 runs.
In reply, Orissa were blasted out for 86. Forced to follow on after conceding a lead of 550 runs in the first innings, Orissa folded up for 212 in the second essay to suffer the humiliating defeat. Orissa allrounder Ramanathalingam Srikant made his first-class debut in this match.
