Mahipal Saudagar bagged a career-best-inning haul of eight for 64 to spearhead Orissa to a 156-run win over Assam on the last day of their three-day East Zone Ranji Trophy match at Veer Surendra Sai Stadium in Sambalpur today. Left-arm orthodox spinner from Sambalpur, Saudagar added four more to his tally in the second innings to finish with a match haul of 12 for 111.
Besides Saudagar, Devashish Mahanti, Swapan Mitra and Abinasha Khatua made notable contributions for the Orissa win, scoring a half-century each. This was the 14th overall win in 104 Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa and 11th win in 32 matches against Assam.
Riding on a knock of 82 by Devasish Mahanti, Orissa made a competitive total of 236 after captain Harmohan Praharaj won the toss and opted to bat. In reply, Assam were dismissed for 160, thanks to the brilliant bowling success of Saudagar.
Orissa further consolidated their position by declaring the second innings at 216 for nine. Chasing 293 for victory, Assam were bowled out for 136 in the second innings to make it an emphatic win for Orissa.
