Karnataka crushed Orissa by 243 runs on the last day of their four-day Ranji Trophy quarterfinal match at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore today. However, Orissa had the credit of giving the star-studded home team a good run for their money.
Seven Orissa players put up impressive performance in this match. They were: batsmen Karun Dubey, Devashish Mahanti, captain Somnath Sahoo, allournders Harmohan Praharaj, Swapan Mitra, Asjit Jayaprakasham and leg spinner Lalitendu Bidyadhar Mohapatra.
Batting first, Karnataka mustered an imposing total of 489 with the help of a century by Brijesh Patel and half-century each by Carlton Saldanha and Syed Kirmani. Among Orissa bowlers, Mohapatra was most successful, bagging five wickets for 123 runs, while Praharaj scalped four for 140.
In reply, Orissa rode on a half-century each by Dubey, Mahanti and Sahoo to compile a respectable total of 276. Leading by 213 runs in the first-innings, Karnataka further consolidated their position, declaring the second innings at 261 for one. Saldanha and Ranjit Khanwilkar slammed an unbeaten century each for the home team.
Chasing a huge target of 475 for victory, Orissa folded up for 231 in their second innings. For Orissa, Dubey scored half-century in both the innings, while Jayaprakasham and Mitra notched slammed half-century each in the second innings.
Mahanty, who is the son of Orissa Olympic Association founder secretary and main architect of Barabati Stadium, made his first-class debut for Orissa. Mahapatra achieved his first five-wicket haul and best bowling success in first-class matches.
