Combination of a half-century each by captain Madan Mohan Mohanty and stumper Vinod Pandarkar and effective bowling by Babu R Rao and Vonod Gupta guided Orissa to a 107-run win over Assam on the last day of their three-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match at Veer Surendra Sai Stadium in Sambalpur today.
This was Orissa’s fifth overall win in 63 Ranji Trophy matches and fourth win in 20 matches against Assam. Put into bat by Assam captain Anup Ghatak, Orissa rode on an unbeaten knock of 70 by captain Madan Mohan Mohanty to compile a respectable total of 163.
In reply, Assam were bowled out for 146 with Babu R Rao and Vinod Gupta taking four and three wickets respectively. Leading by 17 runs in the first innings, Orissa mustered 175 in the second essay to set up a challenging target of 193 for Assam to win the match.
Orissa wicket-keeper Pendarkar was the top scorer in the second innings with 51 runs. Orissa bowlers capped the victory by dismissing Assam for 85 in the second innings. Among home bowlers, Rao, Gupta and Kanak Patel scalped three wickets each.
