Ranji Trophy: Guha bowls Bengal to win over Orissa

Match haul of 12 wickets for 49 runs by medium-fast bowler Subrata Guha enabled Bengal beat Orissa by an innings and 122 runs on the last day of their three-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match at Eden Gardens in Calcutta today. This was Orissa’s 17th defeat and 14th by innings margin in 18 Ranji Trophy matches against Bengal.

Put into bat by Orissa captain NN Swamy, Bengal rode on a half-century each by Prakash Poddar, Gopal Bose and Shyam Sundar Mitra to compile a sizeable total of 286. In reply Orissa were dismissed for 51 in the first innings and 113 in the second after being forced to follow on.

The star of the match was Subrata Guha, who captured seven wickets for 29 runs in the first innings and five for 20 in the second. The seven for 29 was his best innings haul in first-class cricket, the previous best being seven for 49. He also completed 100 wickets in Ranji Trophy, dismissing BR Rao in the first innings.
