After conceding a first-innings lead of 19 runs, host Assam fought back to beat Orissa by three wickets on the last day of their three-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match at Nowgong Sports Club Ground in Nowgong today. This was Orissa’s 5th defeat in 15 Ranji Trophy matches against Assam.
Orissa took the first-innings lead by making 128 after winning the toss and then bundling out the home team for 109. Babu R Rao destroyed the Assam first-innings, bagging seven wickets for 49 runs. But Orissa squandered the advantage as they were skittled out for 67 in the second innings.
Chasing 87 for victory, Assam romped home, losing seven wickets in the process. Harish Vijh made a notable first-class debut for Orissa, scoring 43 runs in the first innings. Orissa wicket-keeper Vinod Pendarkar and batsman Ashish Mohanty also made first-class debut in this match.
