Ranji Trophy: Jena hits maiden ton in drawn tie

Assam garnered five points by virtue of taking first-innings lead, while Orissa settled with three points in their three-day East Zone Ranji Trophy match, which ended in a draw at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack today. Orissa wicket-keeper Bisuddhananda Jena cornered glory in this match, scoring his maiden first-class century.

Opting to bat, Assam rode on a century by Anwar Hussain and a half-century by Tapan Kumar Barua to pile up a total of 278. In reply, host Orissa were bowled out for 191 and condeded a lead of 87 runs. Among successful Orissa batsman, NN Swamy remained unbeaten on 66, while debutant BJ Godbole scored 48.

In the second innings, a seven-wicket haul by Arun Patel helped Orissa bowl out Assam for 151. Hussain once again batted well for Assam, scoring a half-century. Chasing 239 for victory, Orissa were 201 for five at the close of the final day.

The highlight of the second innings was an unbeaten 110 by Bisuddhananda Jena. He, in the process, passed his previous highest score of 79. Another Orissa player who made his first-class debut in this match was Sanjay Satpathy.
