Orissa put up good fight before losing to Bihar by three wickets on the last day of their three-day East Zone Ranji Trophy match at Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur today. This was the fifth defeat in seven Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa against Bihar.
Notwithstanding the defeat, three players of the Orissa team put up impressive performance. Pacer Santanu Satpathy bagged 10 wickets in the match, including six in the second innings. Allrounder NN Swamy was the top scorer in the first innings with an unbeaten 44 and claimed a total of five wickets. BS Alva scored a half-century in the second essay.
Put into bat, Orissa were all out for 119. In reply, Bihar made 202 to take a first-innings lead of 83 runs. In the second innings, Orissa compiled 195, thus setting a victory target of 113 before Bihar. The home team, of course made heavy weather of the chase, but romped home eventually, losing seven wickets in the process. Wicket-keeper S S Misra and batsman Madan Mohan Mohanty made their first-class debut for Orissa.
