Fine allround performance by Surjuram Girdhari enabled Bengal beat Orissa by an innings and 22 runs on the last day of their three-day East Zone Ranji Trophy match at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack today. This was the sixth innings defeat for Orissa in Ranji Trophy.
Girdhari scalped six wickets to help Bengal dismiss Orissa, who batted first, for 162. He then slammed an unbeaten 129 in his team’s total of 296. After conceding a first-innings lead of 134 runs, Orissa folded up for 112 in their second essay.
While Orissa disappointed as a team, Bisuddhananda Jena and NN Swamy achieved notable success on individual capacity. The former scored a half-century in the first innings, while the latter bagged four wickets in the first innings and scored 24 runs in the second essay.
Sasanka Sekhar Patnaik led Orissa in this match, replacing Nimal C Padhi, who was dropped from the team. Raj Dhawan, Kunigal Srikantha Ranganna, SN Roy and Santanu K Satpathy made their first-class debut for Orissa.
