Hockey World Cup: India make flying start

Hosts India got off to a flying start in the 14th Hockey Men’s World Cup, hammering South Africa 5-0 in their opening Pool-C match here at the jam-packed Kalinga Hockey Stadium today. For World No 5 India, Simranjeet Singh scored brace, while Mandeep Singh, Akashdeep Singh and Lalit Upadhyay netted one goal each.

Simranjeet was adjudged the Player of the Match. He was handed over the award and a cash prize Rs 50,000 by Ajitpal Singh, the captain of the 1975 World Cup Champion Indian team. India vice-captain Chinglesana Singh Kangujam made his 200th senior international appearance for India in this match. India mid-fielder Sumit also achieved a milestone of completing 50 international matches today.
