A seven-wicket haul by captain Nitish Samantray enabled Odisha crush Tripura by 114 runs on the third and last day of their Vijay Merchant Trophy East Zone U-16 match at MBB Stadium in Agartala today. Host Tripura lost the match as they were bundled out for 68, while chasing a target of 183. Samantray destroyed the opposition second innings, scalping seven wickets for 32 runs.
Odisha set the challenging target before the home team by declaring their second innings at 171 for seven after resuming at the overnight score of 46 for two. Among successful Odisha batsmen, Suman Kumar Das hit an unbeaten 52, while Manas Ranjan Nayak and Saswat Mohanty contributed 40 and 38 respectively.
This was the second win for Odisha and fetched them six points. Odisha now occupy the third position in the league table with 13 points in their kitty and they will next meet Assam here from December 25 to 28.
Earlier, in reply to a respectable first-innings total of 201 by Odisha, host Tripura folded up for 190 after resuming at the overnight score of 12 for one. Sridam Paul was the top scorer for Tripura with a fighting knock of 84. Among Odisha bowlers, Abinash Singh took three wickets, while Saswat Mohanty, Satyakam Bharadwaj and captain Nitish Samantray picked up a brace each.
Earlier, Saswat Mohanty hit a stroke-filled 69 to enable Odisha make a respectable total in the first innings. Put into bat, Odisha struggled against the bowling of Kajal Sutradhar and Amit Ali. They were able to muster a 200-plus total thanks to the 190-ball knock by Saswat Mohanty, who hit 12 boundaries. His 64-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Subhankar Biswas was the highest for Odisha. Biswas contributed 31 runs.
