Padhi pockets title in All India Chess Tournament

Unheralded Jyoti Ranjan Padhi of Odisha achieved a notable success by emerging champion in the 6th Bhubaneswar FIDE All India Rating (Below 1600) Chess Tournament, which concluded here at Hotel Empires today. Padhi, 29, garnered seven points from eight rounds to take home the top prize of Rs 20,000.

In fact, three players tied for the title with seven points each. The other two were Binu Sebastian of Tamil Nadu and Sai Raj Gopal K of Andhra Pradesh. But on the basis of Buchholz tie-break score, Padhi was declared champion. Sebastian and Raj Gopal settled with second and third prizes of Rs 15,000 and Rs 12,000 respectively.

Altogether 276 players from 12 states participated in the three-day tournament, which was organised by Khordha District Chess Association, under the aegis of All Odisha Chess Association. The tournament carried a total prize fund of Rs 2 lakhs.

Lt Commander Biswajit Nayak, Regional Manager (Facilities), Infosys Technologies Ltd, Bhubaneswar and Subhasis Patnaik, secretary, KDCA handed over the prizes in the closing function.
