Panposh Sports Hostel win All-India School hockey tourney

Rourkela-based Panposh Sports Hostel beat defending champions Government Model School (Jalandhar) 2-0 in the final to emerge champions in the 12th All-India Sardar Balwant Singh Kapur U-17 Schools Hockey Tournament at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar yesterday.

Sibren Lakra scored a field goal to give his team the lead in the 47th minute, while Mandip Kerketta doubled the lead by converting a penalty corner in the 61st minute. CRZ Sonipat defeated Government School, Chhehta (Amritsar) 3-0 in a classification match for third and fourth positions.

Coached by Bijay Lakra, the PSH team won all matches leading to the final as it routed Lucknow Sports Hostel and Delhi with scores of 7-2 and 5-2 respectively. In the semifinal, the Rourkela team handed out a 6-2 defeat to CRZ Sonepat (Haryana).

Panposh Sports Hostel received a cash prize of Rs 1.25 lakh, while runners-up Government Model School got Rs 80,000. CRZ School were presented a cheque for Rs 60,000 and fourth position holders Government School, Chhehta (Amritsar) received a cash award of Rs 40,000. Pratap Lakra of Panposh Sports Hostel was adjudged the best fullback, while his teammate Sudeep Chirmako bagged the best forward award. The duo pocketed a cash prize of Rs 25,000 each.
