Host Town Club emerged champions in the 1st Junior Cricket League, trouncing Bharat Bhusan Cricket Academy by 103 runs in the final at Town Club ground here in Old Town today. The champion team received a cash prize of Rs 10,000 and the runners-up outfit Rs 5,000.
Former India A cricketer Rashmi Ranjan Parida, Odisha Cricket Association joint-secretary Sanjib Dutta, treasurer Satya Mohanty and Town Club president Suresh Routray were present at the closing function as guests. Town Club’s Aniket Patnaik, Binayak Mohanty, Amitanshu Srichandan and Sushil Barik bagged the prizes as man of the tournament, man of the final, best bowler and best fielder respectively.
The best batsman of the tournament prize went to M Prashant of BBCA. Earlier in the semifinals, BBCA thrashed Paramount Sporting by eight wickets, while Town Club beat Saheed Sporting by 40 runs.
The tournament, featuring 10 clubs, was inaugurated by Ekambra MLA Ashok Chandra Panda in the presence of eminent cricket coach Kishore Mania, Town Club president Suresh Routray, adviser Samir Mohanty, vice-president Jayadeb Mohapatra and sports secretary Manoj Mohapatra.
Teams were divided into three groups and after completion of group league, two teams from Group A and one each from Group B and C advanced to the semifinals. Other eight teams in the fray included host Town Club, Greens Academy Jagruti Club, Pragati Sporting, BBCA, Rameswar Sporting, Saheed Sporting and Oscar Sporting.
