Sundargarh eves retain Hockey Odisha state title

Sundargarh thumped Cuttack 6-1 in the lop-sided final to retain the title in the 4th Hockey Odisha State Women Championship at Panposh Sports Hostel astro-turf ground in Rourkela today. Elima Minz was instrumental in the triumph, scoring three goals.

Her team-mates Birajiji Ekka, Jita Ekka and Mariana Ekka struck one goal each, while Bharati Ekka scored the consolation goal for Cuttack, who contended themselves as runners-up for the second time in a row.

Earlier in the semifinals, Sundargarh hammered Ganjam 8-1, while Cuttack beat host Rourkela 2-0. Sundargarh Additional Collector Rabindra Nath Mishra handed over the trophy in the closing function. Hockey Odisha secretary Pratap Satpathy was present on the occasion.

Altogether eight teams participated in the three-day championship. But Cuttack, Ganjam and Deogarh teams were dubbed by media as `Forgy (Forgery) teams` because they had in their ranks almost all the players from Sundargarh.
