Maiden five-wicket haul by medium-pacer Pritam Das and a half-century by Pallavkumar Das helped Assam trounce Odisha by eight wickets in a league match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy East Zone Cricket Tournament at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata today. This was the second defeat in three days for Odisha, who earlier went down to Bengal by 11 runs. On the other hand, Assam, who thrashed Tripura by identical margin in their opening match, jumped to the top of the table with 10 points from two outings.
Odisha lost half the battle as they were bowled out for 140 after being put into bat by Assam skipper Abu Nechim. Pritam Das dismissed five of the top six batsmen to leave Odisha reeling at 101 for six. They never recovered from the crisis despite a patient half-century by Govind Poddar, who hit four boundaries in his 83-ball knock of 50.
Odisha’s bowling performance was as disappointing as their batting and Assam made full use of it to romp home with 15.3 overs to spare. Left-hand opening batsman Pallavkumar Das top scored with 62 (96 balls, 4x9), which was his third half-century in List A cricket. Medium-pacer Suryakant Pradhan, who made his List A debut, was the most expensive Odisha bowler, conceding 39 runs in five overs.
