Nine sportspersons and 12 officials from Orissa would represent India in the 19th Commonwealth Games to be held in New Delhi from October 3 to 14. This was announced by Orissa Olympic Association (OOA) today.
The nine sportspersons include five hockey players, two athletes, one gymnast and one weightlifter. But the OOA perhaps committed a mistake by naming Poonam Rani as a woman hockey player from Orissa. When OOA secretary Asirbad Behera was contacted for clarification, he said he would verify and confirm it tomorrow. However, leading hockey players and coach of the state made it clear that Poonam Rani did not belong to Orissa.
``We had a goalkeeper named Poonam Toppo, who was from Jharsuguda. She was an inmate of Panposh Sports Hostel and represented India at the junior level. However, after joining Eastern Railway, she has been representing Jharkhand. But Poonam Rani certainily does not belong to Orissa,`` said senior coach of the Rourkela-based government sports hostel,
which became well-known as the new nursery of Indian hockey.
Among the officials from Orissa, Ashok Mishra would be acting as the coach of the Indian gymnastic squad. Nine of the officials would be doing duty as national technical officials.
