VCAO continues to promote school cricket

The 8th edition of Bhubaneswar Inter-School Cricket Tournament, began under the auspices of The Veterans` Cricket Association of Orissa (VCAO) with two easy wins at Paramount ground in Bhubaneswar today. Kendriya Vidyalaya No 1 rode D Raj’s dashing half-century to crush BJEM School by six wickets in the opening match of the VCAO Bhubaneswar Inter-School Cricket Tournamentan VSS Nagar High School trounced Ashwashs School by 10 wickets in another match of the day. It is a heartening feature of cricket in Orissa that Veterans’ Cricket Association of Orissa, which introduced the concept of promoting the game at the grassroots level, has done a commendable work by continueing the school-level tournament. Altogether 24 schools, including defending champions Stewart School and last year’s runners-up Venkateswar English Medium School (Unit-4) have confirmed to participate in the tournament, which will be conducted simultaneously at Paramount Sporting ground (BJB Nagar) and IDCO ground (Mancheswar). Ashwashs School (Old Town), D M School (Unit-9), KISS School and CCIE School (Acharya Vihar) will make their maiden appearance in the tournament. Other teams in the fray include St Xavier High School (Kedargouri), Ruchika High School (Unit-4), DAV Public School (Pokhariput), Government High School (Unit-8), DAV Public School (Unit-8), Mother’s Public School, Government High School (IRC Village), St Xavier High School (Khandagiri), Prabhujee EM School, Guru Nanak School, Venkateswar EM Schoo (Unit-9), DAV Public School (Chandrasekharpur), Vivekananda Sikshya Kendra, Somanath Sikshya Kendra and ODM School. The champion school will be eligible to represent Bhubaneswar in the State inter-school tournament to be conducted by Orissa Cricket Association next year. Brief scores: BJEM School 119/10 in 19.4 overs (Saurav Das 21: Ansuman Kumar 4/18) lost to Kendriya Vidyalaya 121/4 in 13.3 overs (D Raj 51, S Sahoo 2/16, A Akash 2/12). Ashwashs School 43/10 in 16.5 overs (H Mohanty 3/5, N Padhi 3/3) lost to VSS Nagar High School 46/10 in 11 overs (Sunil Paswan 24).
