Local teenager Biswajeet Nayak pipped experienced city opponent Manas Ranjan Parida on the basis of progressive score (42-40) to emerge champion in the 2nd Sundeep Mohanty Memorial Open Chess Tournament at OSMOA House in Bhubaneswar today. Progressive score was applied after both Nayak and Parida tied for the top position with 7.5 points each.
Defending champion Rajendra Kumar Sahu finished third with seven points. UCO Bank Zonal Manager N Sambasiva Rao and Tata Steel Chief Residant Executive Rajesh Chintak gave away prizes at the closing function. Organised by Bhubaneswar Chess Association, the nine-round tournament offered a total cash prize of Rs 10,500, including Rs 3,000 for the champion. Asian Junior girls champion Padmini Rout was felicitated at the closing function.
