Orissa occupied the second place in the medals table with a collection of 11 golds, eight silvers and seven bronzes in the opening day of the 21st East Zone Junior Athletic Championship which commenced at Kalinga Stadium today. West Bengal athletes asserted their supremacy on the first day of the three-day meet, bagging a total of 42 medals, which included 15 golds, 16 silvers and 11 bronzes.
West Bengal girl Pinky Dey rewrote the National shot put record in the under-18 age group. She threw the iron ball to a distance of 13.22 metres to better the previous record of 13.13 metres, set by Steffy Cardozo (Goa) at New Delhi on September 30, 2006.
Altogether 510 athletes from 11 states joined the three-day meet, which is being organised by Orissa Athletic Association. The meet offers medals in 125 events for boys and girls in four different age groups (14, 16, 18 and 20 years).

Silver: Ramachandra Kisku (boys-16 800m run), Praveen Bhoi (boys-18 javelin), Subhadra Das (girls-14 100m run), Mamata Mani Das (girls-16 3,000m run), Girls-16 medley relay (Duti Chand, Rajanigandha Munda, Smrutisudha Jena, Bibiana Kullu), Girls-18 medley relay (Namita Kabat, Puspanjali Mallick, Dulari Kisku, Sailendri Nag), Boys-16 medley relay (Guja Marandi, Surendra Kisku, Siman Tirkey, Ramachandra Tirkey.
Bronze: Satya Pedenti (boys-18 100m run), Rajendra Toppo (boys-20 100m run), Bhaktu Soren (boys-20 800m run), Damayanti Murmu (girls-14 100m run), Susama Toppo (girls-14 600m run), Bibiana Kullu (girls-16 100m run), Namita Kabat (girls-18 800m run), Susmita Kullu (girls-18 3,00m run).
