Sasmal becomes Orissa’s first FIDE arbiter

Nihar Ranjan Sasmal (Cuttack) became the first International Chess Federation (FIDE) arbiter of Orissa by successfully passing the examination, which was conducted during the first FIDE arbiters’ seminar at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai, from June 24 to 27. According to All India Chess Federation (AICF), Asian Chess Federation deputy president, Casto Abundo supervised the seminar as the resource person and lecturer. He was assisted by International Arbiter and member of the FIDE Swiss Pairing Programs Commission, Prof R Anantharam. Abundo lectured on laws of chess, rating, title and tournament regulations. Prof Anantharam explained the salient features of Swiss Pairings with example and also dealt with case studies on all the topics. All the participants were supplied with course materials and power point presentations of the lectures. At the end of the session, the participants appeared the examination, which consisted of objective multiple choice questions. Twenty-two other participants, including eight each from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and three each from Maharashtra, Assam also secured the FIDE arbiter title, which is next to International Arbiter title, awarded by the world chess body. Sasmal will now be able to conduct rating, national and international events. Orissa Chess Adhoc Committee congratulated Sasmal on this occasion and wished him a successful career.
